Barrier Breakers Unlimited Inc. is proud to introduce LaunchPoint, a comprehensive Parent Training and Information initiative that seeks to empower families of students with disabilities during the pivotal transition from school to adulthood. Rooted in the principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and focused on equity, advocacy, and self-sufficiency, LaunchPoint is dedicated to helping families navigate the complex world of education, resources, and rights for students with disabilities.
Each year, thousands of students with disabilities transition out of the school system with limited understanding of the essential life skills, resources, and rights they need to succeed as adults. Families often face challenges in navigating transition planning, Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes, and accessing community services, especially when they come from historically underserved or marginalized communities. LaunchPoint exists to change this narrative and fill this gap.
Our initiative specifically focuses on families facing economic hardship, language or cultural barriers, and systemic inequities in accessing services. Through hands-on training, advocacy tools, and personalized support, we aim to ensure that families are equipped with the knowledge and resources to advocate effectively for their children’s futures.
Interactive workshops that provide parents with a thorough understanding of IDEA, IEP transition planning, postsecondary rights, and critical disability-related policies. This training empowers parents to advocate for their child’s needs and navigate the complexities of the educational and services systems.
Age-appropriate, hands-on training for both students and their families, covering essential topics like financial literacy, housing readiness, time management, health, and self-advocacy. These workshops aim to build critical skills for independent living and long-term success.
Personalized case management and one-on-one support from a licensed social worker to address each family’s unique needs, provide guidance on navigating available services, and help create personalized transition plans.
We ensure our materials and workshops are delivered in multiple languages and formats, co-designed with community partners to guarantee accessibility and inclusivity for all families.
Career exploration and job-readiness support, including guidance on higher education, vocational training, and supported employment programs. Our team connects students and families with the right resources to facilitate successful post-school transitions.
Educational experiences that help build social-emotional confidence and expand real-world understanding for students and families. These trips and activities enhance life skills and provide opportunities to engage with the community.
At the heart of LaunchPoint is a three-stage framework that supports families and students throughout the transition process:
Building trust and understanding between families, schools, and the community. This stage lays the groundwork for future development and ensures families are equipped with the foundational knowledge they need to advocate effectively for their child.
Focused on the whole child, this stage provides individualized academic support and social-emotional development, ensuring that students are prepared for success in the 21st century. Personalized planning helps set goals for future growth.
Ensuring long-term growth and independence through structured follow-up, accountability, and goal-setting. This stage helps students and families maintain momentum as they transition to adulthood and supports sustained success.
We invite families to enroll in LaunchPoint and become part of a supportive community dedicated to empowerment, advocacy, and transition success. The enrollment process is straightforward and designed to ensure that each applicant meets the criteria for participation in the program.
